Interesting facts and reasons why many people keep coming back to Cape Town
Updated: Aug 30, 2020
Cape Town is much more than my passion, it’s my home and a dream destination for many in every sense – home to the iconic landmark, Table Mountain.
In this city, you can immerse yourself in the ecstasy of beaches, sightseeing, winelands, nightlife, dining, history, wildlife, marine wildlife and nature. Looking at Table Mountain reminds me that she stands for strength and hope.
Cape Town is undoubtedly one of the top tourist destinations in the world. There’s a reason why Cape Town has become a globally sought-after destination for both holiday-goers and expats, and it’s not just about the natural beauty. There’s a vibrant spirit in the city and its surrounds that has a magnetic pull, making it difficult for even the most superficial traveller to permanently leave Cape Town behind. Even a short period of living in Cape Town will have a profound impact.
Here are some few interesting facts and reasons why many people keep coming back to Cape Town:
1. YOU CAN LIVE THE GOOD LIFE FOR LESS One thing I can tell you about Capetonians is that they have the work/life balance figured out. It's not a joke when they say in Cape Town, for many, work usually starts at 09:00am and ends at 15:00pm, and in summer days you can still enjoy beautiful sunsets until 20:30pm.
Long day at work? Why not head to the beach to unwind before a relaxing sunset? Busy morning of classes ahead? Grab a perfectly pretentious flat white on the go to kick-start your day. There are restaurants, wine farms, coffee shops and all the activities you need to give you one of the most balanced lifestyles imaginable. You will feel like you are on a "never-ending" holiday. Though it sounds like a line out of a cliched marketing brochure, Cape Town is remarkably liveable, and it’s also still somewhat affordable if you know your way around or have a local buddy to share some tricks with you. If you’re an international travellers with some foreign currency, it’s likely to be cheaper than any other international destination that can live up to Cape Town’s high standards.
2. YOU WILL IMPROVE YOUR STREET-SMART LEVELS Cape Town is, on the whole, a safe city for visitors and residents. Security is always visible in almost every corner of popular streets. With that said, you’ll still need to lock your car, keep valuables out of sight and avoid wandering aimlessly down shady streets. I recommend asking a local buddy/guide who knows his/her way around the streets of Cape Town to hang with you. They always know where the fun is and which streets are safer.
Living or spending some time in Cape Town will help improve your awareness of potentially dangerous situations and teach you not to fear every person walking in your direction who looks a bit different to you. You’ll leave Cape Town with street skills that will stand you in good stead for any future travelling around the world. There’s always something to do and fun is never far away when you’re in Cape Town. Throughout the year, there are farmers markets, events, celebrations, festivals, sporting events and large weekend concerts taking place all the time. It really takes a special person and too much effort to be bored in a city like this, regardless of whether you’re here for a weekend, two weeks or two years.
3. YOU WILL GAIN AN UNDERSTANDING OF INEQUALITY Though it’s easy to visit Cape Town and live in a bubble of sunset cocktails and overpriced cappuccinos, living here provides you with opportunities to understand how the country is grappling with inequality, poverty and high rate of unemployment.
Step out of your comfort zone and join a township tour or volunteer at one of the many registered Non-Profit Organisations based in the city, you’ll learn a lot about the good work many people are doing to overcome years of oppression and inequality. But even if that’s not the sole purpose of your visit, and you’re not eager to move too far out of your comfort zone, living in Cape Town with some sensitivity and self-awareness will be an eye-opening experience.
4. YOU ARE NEVER FAR FROM INCREDIBLE NATURE OR BEACH
Cape Town is the ultimate city for nature and beach lovers. If you’re looking for a quick escape from the city, you can be on a beach, at the foot of a mountain or lost in a forest in a matter of minutes.
It’s one of the safest and most accessible South African city centres. South African central business districts (CBD's) are somewhat notorious as far as crime and quality of life go. Though strides are being made in many CBD's around South Africa, Cape Town has led the way as the country’s most vibrant, safe and accessible city centre.
There are restaurants, coffee shops, stores, bars, night clubs and apartments in and around the city that make it a great place to live in. It’s safe to walk around during the day and night, but like any city in the world, you have to keep your wits about you, especially after dark.
I have enjoyed creating this 4-part series (posts) about interesting facts and reasons why many people keep coming back to Cape Town. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did creating it.
